Development of Narrator Evaluation

The methodology, vocabulary, and typology developed by these hadith critics were further refined by the scholars of the third century AH. At the beginning of the century, figures such as Ibn Saʿd, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal played a critical role in consolidating and expanding the science of narrator evaluation. Later in the same century, these efforts were advanced by the likes of al-Bukhārī and the Rāzī family. One significant area of development was the classification of narrator types. Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj (d. 261 AH) introduced a tripartite categorization of narrators, and Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī (d. 279 AH) proposed a four-tiered system. Although their schemes differed in the number of categories, they operated within a broadly similar evaluative framework that emphasized integrity, reliability, accuracy, and acceptance by earlier authorities.
